According to Western Connecticut State University, volunteering helps you connect with others and gain valuable experience while doing it.
Matthew Guillen is direct proof of this claim, as he decided to continue his work with Wholly AMusED even after his co-op term was over! Wholly AMusED asked some questions about how he was doing now, and what he learned. Here’s what he said;
Wholly AMusED: What drew you to co-op initially?
I chose to do co-op because it provides me with valuable experience. I have a disability, which makes finding opportunities difficult. Making this connection gives me more opportunity down the line.
Wholly AMusED: Why did you choose to stay with Wholly AMusED after your co-op was over?
I chose to stay because I enjoy working with Elizabeth Zinck-Hickey. I also learned about new customer relations software, and I enjoy data management. I like volunteering, and the work we do is important for community and youth welfare.
Wholly AMusED: What would you say to someone who is considering a co-op?
I would highly recommend it. The co-op teaches valuable work skills, and gives experience. It also allows new connections and helps to expand your social network.
Wholly AMusED: What do you do for volunteering now?
At the moment I am also volunteering for Boxes of hearts. At boxes of hearts I package chocolate covered licorice. I also participate in Sunday social activities.
Wholly AMusED: What has been your favorite part of the Wholly AMusED experience thus far?
My favorite part was learning how to use HubSpot. I learned how from linkedin learning. I also enjoy going to breakfast meets with Elizabeth. I learned lots about collaboration, and it was fun to work with her.
